Life with Madeline: Week 1

I can't believe my baby is already over a week old! I really feel like time is going to fly with this little one & since she's 100% likely to be our last baby I am trying to enjoy every minute of this newborn stage. She's never going to be this little & this sweet again. I definitely have found myself spending more time snuggling her & less time worrying about everything else this time around. Time is definitely a thief..

Stats: At 4 days old last Friday she weighed 7lbs. 6.4oz. Since she had lost 8oz. the doctor asked us to bring her back in for a weight check on Tuesday to make sure that she is gaining. Yesterday at her weight check she was up to 7lbs. 10.4oz so we're definitely on the right track. She goes back for her 2 week WCC next Tuesday. She's still in newborn clothes & wearing newborn size diapers. She is wearing size 0 or crib size shoes.

Nursing: She's doing great! She definitely took right to it (just as Holden did) and most of the time she's just as efficient as he was. She does nurse often during the day at this point & sometimes she ends up nursing hourly. Other times she ends up napping for a couple hours & then wakes up starting the process all over again. She had a small problem with a shallow latch the first few days, but we have since corrected that & she latches well most times on her own (even in the middle of the night). My milk didn't come in fully until the third day so that may have been part of the problem. She usually nurses fairly quickly doing about 10-15 mins per side. She doesn't always nurse on both sides & most times she doesn't ends up being overnight which leaves me less then comfortable to say the least. At this point we don't have a schedule & I'm not sure how many times a day she is eating as we aren't tracking it. Ain't nobody got time for that with two other kids running around! But she is nursing 100% on demand at this point as that seemed to work best with Holden & thus far it's working well for Madeline too.

Sleep: The first few nights were pretty bad. She didn't sleep at ALL between 10/11-3AM for at least 3 nights in a row. It was fairly terrible & had me taking a daily afternoon naps just to keep my eyes open. Thank the Lord that K was off work for the week or it would have been impossible to function. After that it finally seemed to click for her that nighttime was nighttime aka sleep time & she started sleeping in longer stretches. Currently she's waking 2-3 times per night in-between 10PM & 5:30AM. BUT it does take a me a while to get her back to sleep in the middle of the night because she often falls asleep nursing on one side only to wake up a bit later to nurse on the other. She is also a difficult burper (just like Carter) & sometimes it takes me quite some time to get her gas out. After her 5:30AM wake-up, she usually goes back to sleep until about 7:30/8 eats again & most often goes back to sleep AGAIN for another few hours. She does take a Soothie pacifier occasionally at this point for comfort, but honestly prefers to nurse for comfort or suck on her fingers (when she can find them). I'm not sure at this point whether she'll be a paci kid like Holden ended up being or if she'll be a thumb sucker. It's kind of a toss up at this point. She doesn't startle herself awake often (like Carter did) & thus far we haven't been swaddling her for naps/nighttime as she doesn't seem to need it. Currently she is sleeping with us in our bed, but this is just par for the course as far as our kids are concerned. I don't forsee moving her to her own room for at least a few months or until she is STTN regularly. During the day she naps either in our bed, in the rock n' play or on us. She is definitely a cuddle baby & loves to be held/snuggled while she sleeps. Her favorite place is in daddy's arms in the rocker.

Other: She is already SUPER strong & can hold her head up really well while doing tummy time or while on our shoulders. It amazes us & were absolutely sure she's going to be ahead of her game. ;) When nursing she loves to hold her own hands & it is seriously the sweetest thing I have ever seen in my life. She is such a little diva already, if she thinks it's time to eat she squawks repeatedly until she gets fed even if she JUST ate. She loves to put on a big show of being wronged, but it's also pretty cute at this point. When she's alert, she is very alert! She loves to look around & be on her play mat. She is very entertained by her big brothers already & will just stare in fascination anytime they interact with her. She's not a huge fan of her car seat or being in the car at this point, but we think that's more because she wants to eat so often then anything else. She also is not a big fan of taking baths at this point & squawks through most of that process as well. I'm sure she'll grow to love them eventually. She appears to have curly hair like myself & Holden, but definitely not as curly as ours, it is also lighter then H's was at birth & is more of a light brown/dark blonde. Currently her eyes are a very dark blue & she has at least one dimple.

Milestones:

02/01: Met her brothers for the first time at the hospital. =)

02/02: First car ride, home from the hospital. It shouldn't even really count since it was such a short trip. =)

02/04: First bath at home. HATED IT. First time being on her playmat & doing tummy time. I'm amazed with how strong she is already!

02/05: First doctor's appt. She did well & mostly slept on the exam table the whole visit. =) She only got upset when I picked her up to put her on the scale.

02/07: First Super Bowl Sunday! Haha

Likes: EATING!! Momma, snuggling with Daddy, Carter, & her hands.

Dislikes: Baths, being restrained, pacifiers, & having to wait for food.
