It could be a lot worse...

The GTT test that is!

I finally decided to bite the bullet today, so to speak, & get my test over with. I had heard innumerable bad things about the experience as a whole & was not looking forward to it to say the least. I had kept the drink in the fridge since my last OB appt. (4 weeks ago) at the suggestion of EVERYONE I knew. because apparently  the colder the better. According to the directions that my OB gave me, I was to start drinking the syrup & was to finish it within a 10 minute time period. I thought I was going to have to choke the stuff down. I decided that I would start drinking it at 11:00AM & then be at the lab by 11:45AM (easy to remember with pregnancy brain). I wanted to give my breakfast a little time to settle because I thought for sure that the syrup would end up making me nauseous.

I took the syrup out of the fridge, shook it up a little bit & then opened the bottle. Right when the clock hit 11AM I took a HUGE gulp thinking that faster would be better. In truth, it didn't really taste that bad at all. Nothing like what I had feared anyways. It wasn't the most delicious thing I have ever drank in my life, but it wasn't the most disgusting either. It pretty much tasted like flat orange soda. I was able to sip on the drink & finish it with time to spare. I left the house & headed to the clinic about 5 mins after I finished the drink. I wanted to give myself time to get there in case something happened. I did notice two unpleasant things immediately after finishing said syrup. Firstly, I had to go to the bathroom almost IMMEDIATELY. Pregnancy coincidence? Maybe. The other thing I noticed was that the syrup also immediately gave me heartburn. Definitely not a coincidence. =(  However, there was no nausea involved nor any bad after tastes. I checked in at the lab at 11:45AM & was called back right at 12PM. My blood draw was quick & easy.

Now I just sit back & wait until my OB appt next week to find out if I passed or not. I hope I did, but if I do end up having to do the 3 hour test at least I can rest assured that the only bad part will be the time spent waiting.

  2. I doubt I will hear anything before my appt. next week. Usually if the news is good, I don't hear anything. lol So I am actually hoping NOT to hear anything until Monday.
