Week 1 with baby boy

1 week old
I can not believe that my little honey bear is a week old already! Time is just flying by WAY too quickly. I feel like he's already growing up too fast.

It has been quite the dramatic week already for us.

We left the hospital on Monday at 12PM with a poor little guy who hadn't gone to the bathroom (poop or pee) in 22 hours. I am VERY miffed at the hospital for letting us leave knowing this. They told us to call his Pedi if nothing by 4pm (26 hours). When my Carter STILL hadn't gone by then we ended up having to take him first to UC & then ended up at the ER where he promptly DESTROYED their exam room with pooping EVERYWHERE & then spraying pee all over the room, mommy & daddy as well as himself (think major fire hose). The ER doc couldn't really do much at that point since he had finally gone to the bathroom, but it was a shaky next two days with the little man still not having the proper output. Fortunately, he finally seems to be regulated. =)

We had our post-partum follow-up appt at the hospital on Wednesday & both Carter & I checked out just fine. He had only lost 3% of his body weight & his jaundice level was at an 8 so still very low. The nurse congratulated us on being the first family that day that she DIDN'T have to call the doctor on. =)

Also, since daddy is in the military & has an ORI this week (from Mon-Sun) I have basically been on my own all week. I feel sad for both Carter & Mr. K. I feel like he is already missing so much time with his precious boy. It was rough on me the first few days as well with not being very recovered from labor. Were hanging in there & thank goodness for visits from family & friends to keep me company. I don't know what I would do without them! Needless to say, we are VERY glad that Mr. K only has 1 more day of being on duty.

Carter has been a pro at breastfeeding since the beginning & other then feeling the effects of a little bit of engorgement we are doing VERY well. I never really thought we would have a problem with breastfeeding, but you do hear horror stories all the time. So far. so good here. I am willing to bet that this kid will be back to his birth weight or beyond by his 2 week Pedi appt next Thursday.

Sleep has been going pretty great as well. Last night Carter even slept 4+ hours straight! He woke up to eat & was back to sleep within 30 mins. He then slept for another 3 hours straight. I may just have gotten lucky last night, but I am not complaining about 7 hours of blissful sleep. I will definitely take what I can get!!

1 week postpartum
As far as I'm concerned....I'm holding up pretty well. I never realized how slow the recovery process is, but I'm hanging in there. I really am tired of being sore, but witch hazel is my BFF! I know it can take several weeks to get back to normal, but I really wish someone would have warned me about this part. I guess I was naive enough to assume that I would come home & be completely normal. The first 4 days I pretty much felt like I had just ran a marathon.

Thus far I am down 16lbs since my last OB appt. What's sad is that I came home from the hospital at only 10lbs down. Being that I have been home alone for the last week it's really been hard to try to find the time to make or even eat anything substantial. I find myself living off snacks (at least they're healthy). Not to mention that my appetite does not seem to be great these days. =( Gotta do the best I can for now. Hopefully my nutrition will improve a bit once the hubby is home starting tomorrow. I can't wait for us to actually spend some quality time as a family of three. I am feeling a bit like a single mom these days. I know he's looking forward to finally being home as well. Such is the life of a military wife.

  1. A very belated congratulations!! I'm trying to catch up on my blog reading and I haven't gotten a chance to tell you how happy I am that you finally got to meet your LO. Glad his system is regulated, I had to laugh out loud that he waited until he got into the ER before he decided to poop for you guys...what a mess! I hope you and your husband are enjoying your new family now that he's home with you guys.
