Tuesday's Pinned It, Then Did It

So lot of pic's for this week's installment of pinned it, then did it Tuesday....

I decided to get a jump start on Christmas presents this year (I can spill here since no family reads the blog) & found some GREAT stuff on Pinterest. The first thing I thought I'd take a stab at were coasters. They seemed simple enough, cheap, & who doesn't need coasters? Right? Right!

Unfortunately, the pin I pinned didn't actually link to anything anymore so I had to do a bit of research & wing it a bit, but I LOVE how they turned out regardless. =) Here's what I did in case you want to try it...

For this project you will need:

4x4 Tile (0.16 at Home Depot)
Mod Podge (I used super gloss)
Clear Spray paint or finishing/sealant spray
Scrapbook paper (4x4 or cut to size)
Felt (0.26 at Walmart or 0.29 at the craft store like Michael's)
Pencil
Ruler
Scissors (GOOD ONES, especially for felt cutting)
Foam brushes
Exacto Knife (Optional, could use Scissors instead)
Workspace & supplies.
The first step I took for this project was measuring & cutting my scrap paper to tile size. I did this by laying the tile down & tracing around it in pencil onto the back of the scrap paper. You can cut the paper to fit exactly, to over-hang the sides of the tile or short to be bordered on all sides. I initially cut to fit & then did some with over-hang as well. They all turned out great! I cut my scrap paper using an Exacto-knife & a ruler, but you could also use scissors here.

The next thing I did was to apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the top of my tile with my foam brush & then centered my scrap paper over the top. I then let this dry for 15-20 mins. After it was dry, I applied more Mod Podge to the tops of the papered tile in a thin coat. Letting this dry for 15-20 mins. I repeated this step 3 more times with each tile allowing for 15-20 mins of dry time between each coat. If  you are impatient & don't want to wait that long between coats you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process. I had the time so I chose to wait.
Paper cut to size & podged to the top of tile.
After this the tiles need to cure over-night. I just left mine to sit out on the counter-top in the kitchen
Finished podging. Waiting to set overnight.
The next morning, I set my tiles on top of my felt & traced around it with my pencil. I then used my Fiskar Razor Edge scissors to cut out my felt squares. I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the bottoms of all the tiles with my foam brush & centered the felt on the bottom of the tile. I then let them dry for the 15-20 mins. Once dry, I turned the tiles over & used my Fiskar scissors to trim off the extra felt around all the edges.
Felt applied with Podge to bottoms of tile.
All the coasters drying in the sun after being sprayed with the sealer.
I then took my coasters outside to seal them. I layed down some newspaper first & did this on our back deck. I sprayed the first coat & then let them dry for 2 hours. I then applied a second coat & they dried again for about 2-3 hours. After this your coasters will be done!

You have to let them cure over night again before you can start using them with cold drinks & just as an FYI, you have to let them cure for a full 30 days before you can use them for hot drinks so I am glad I started now for use after Christmas!

Finished product ready to be gifted. =)
